Sexual Politics in Contemporary Europe

Seminarium

Seminar with professor in criminology May-Len Skilbrei, University of Oslo

Title:
Sexual Politics in Contemporary Europe

Abstract:
European countries are currently revising their laws on issues to do with sexuality, such as prostitution, rape, and grooming. While the developments are very different throughout the region, they all point to how European countries are significantly more invested in policy-making in the field of sexuality than previously. Sexuality and gender are also topics taken up in the EU Parliament and addressed through resolutions and framework decisions.

The EU continuously balances which issues should be harmonised and which should be guided by national agendas and priorities, and if we in fact are seeing more EU level involvement in these issues, this means that particular ways of defining and regulating gender and sexuality more than before are seen as a part of European identity. The flurry of national and EU level policy making and debate indicates to us that something is at stake, and in this presentation I will look into what this might be.
