PhD midway seminar: Carlo Nicoli Aldini

PhD candidates at the Sociology of Law Department hold three seminars during their education - a start seminar, a mid-seminar, and a final seminar. Participation in seminars is essential to the PhD education to reach the learning outcomes fully. The seminars are always in English.
Steel fighting: Legal mobilization in Taranto and Italy’s Southern Question
My doctoral research investigates how and why citizens of Taranto, a city in the south of Italy where one of the largest steel factories in Europe is located, have resorted to courts to fight against the environmental decay caused by the factory. The project explores the political, legal, social, and cultural conditions that have pushed the local citizenry to seek legal protection to address the socioenvironmental crisis caused by the steelworks. Further, it contextualizes the analysis within the so-called Southern Question, the longstanding socioeconomic divide between the North and the South of Italy. Agenda 2030 Graduate School established at the Faculty of Social Science, Lund University funds the project.
Carlo Nicoli Aldini holds a law degree from the University of Bologna, Italy (2014), an LL.M. (Master of Laws) degree from Cornell Law School, United States (2019), and a Master of Science degree in the Sociology of Law from Lund University, Sweden (2021).
