Research Seminar in Sociology of Law with Alan Norrie & Peter Bergwall
The Sociology of Law Department arranges a series of research seminars inviting both local and international researchers who are conducting state of the art research within various areas of law and society.
Critical Realism and Law
In this session, we are looking at Alan Norrie’s work which combines critical analysis of law, especially criminal justice theory, with a linked interest in critical realism in its different phases. The reading introduces Alan’s interests in conversation with Jamie Morgan and the session will explore this. Peter Bergwall will introduce his own work on Swedish healthcare law, which draws on Alan’s work on the idea of a ‘legal architectonic.’ Depending on time, Alan will then introduce his current work on law and moral psychology.
This seminar is hosted online. Follow this link at the time of the seminar to attend via Zoom.
Alan Norrie is a Professor at the University of Warwick's School of Law. He is interested in the critical and historical analysis of criminal law and in its ethical and doctrinal problems, and in ideas of guilt, forgiveness and justice. His background is in socio-legal theory and in critical realist and dialectical philosophy.
Peter Bergwall earned his doctoral degree at the Sociology of Law Department, Lund University, in 2021, defending his thesis "Exploring Paths of Justice in the Digital Healthcare: A Socio-Legal Study of Swedish Online Doctors", which investigates healthcare services provided via smartphone apps. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in the department.
