Sami knowledge claims in court
Reindeer herding communities’ land rights litigation on the Swedish side of Sápmi
During recent decades, Indigenous Sami groups have been increasingly claiming their land rights in court. Based on court document analysis and interviews, Camille explores how Sami reindeer herding communities engage in legal cases about historical land use, biodiversity conservation and the licensing of wind farms. She focuses on how litigants combine traditional knowledge and academic research to present evidence to judges.
Camille is a doctoral student in ‘Peace and development research’ affiliated to a project entitled ‘Litigating land rights in Sápmi: Indigenous legal mobilisation in Finland, Norway and Sweden’ at the School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg. She has a master’s degree in political science from the University of Lausanne and two years of experience as a communication officer at Agroscope, the Swiss centre for agricultural research. Alongside her doctoral studies, she coordinates the Faculty of Social Sciences’ participation in the Swedish Forum for Human Rights.
