Sociology of Law Research Seminars: TBA

Seminarium
The Sociology of Law Department arranges a series of research seminars inviting both local and international researchers who are conducting state of the arts research within various areas of law and society. These seminars are arranged on Wednesday afternoons, advertised on the Department's website in advance, and are normally open to the public.

Oscar Björkenfeldt, PhD Candidate at the Sociology of Law Department, Lund University

The aim of the research is to analyze journalistic challenges in a digital context from a sociology of law crime victim perspective, in relation to the enforcement of democratic rule of law. The central themes within the framework of the overall purpose are legal certainty, the state’s ability to provide legal remedies to protect the freedom of speech for journalists.

The research will include an approach that

  1. Explores the diffusion of online hatred – identifying patterns in online hate and threats against journalists.
  2. Examines the extent to which journalists suffer from online hate and threats, linked to an understanding of how they experience the situation.
  3. Examines journalists' experiences of hatred and threats, including the ability of the juridical system to provide protection and support; and how they reason regarding the risk of developing strategies of self-censorship to protect themselves.
