Karl studied law and criminology at Stockholm University and graduated in sociology of law at Lund University in 2007. He defended his doctoral thesis at the Sociology of Law in 2012. His dissertation "Kränkning och upprättelse: En rättssociologisk studie av kränkningsersättning till brottsoffer" received an award by the New Society of Letters at Lund.
Karl's teaching focused on how social science is relevant in applying law, legislation and within the legal profession. His main research interest was how society and the law deal with victims of crime, primarily through the type of crime victim compensation intended to provide victims with redress.
Karl also had a keen interest in the philosophy of law. He was accepted as a member of the British Wittgenstein Society and the Swedish section of the International Association for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy in 2020.
His sudden passing is an immense loss and leaves colleagues at the Sociology of Law Department in grief.
The funeral takes place in Stora Salen at the Grand Hotell in Lund at 14:00 on January 25.
