FAQ Admission & application

Admission requirements

What are Lund University’s language requirements?
Please check universityadmissions.se for information on English language proficiency requirements.

Am I eligible for this programme?
Admission to the Master's degree programmes requires a Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences with a clear major in Sociology of Law or one of the following disciplines: Sociology, Law, Political Science, Social Work, or the equivalent. In Sweden a major corresponds to at least three semesters of full-time study/90 credits in one discipline. A clear major is necessary for eligibility but we also take into consideration international variations in our evaluation of this aspect.

Why do I need to have a major in these disciplines?
In the Swedish educational system the major in your Bachelor's degree needs to correspond with the major in your MSc. The reason for this system is to ensure a clear progression in studies and in-depth knowledge in one field, i.e. theories and research methods in one discipline.

I will complete my Bachelor studies after the application deadline of 16 January but before the programme begins in the autumn. Am I eligible to apply?
Yes, you are. Please send, together with your application, a certificate from your University stating your current enrolment on a course/programme that, when finished before 30 August will lead to the award of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Please also bring your degree certificate and complete transcript of records in the original to the start of the programme (Registration Day), if you are admitted.

There seem to be problems with my general eligibility to the programme – who can I contact?
All documents are sent to the central admissions office in Sweden. You may initially use the contact information universityadmissions.se if, for example, your documents have arrived late and you are afraid that you will not be considered for the programme. The admissions office at Lund University will assess your general eligibility with regard to degree qualifications and English proficiency. You may contact them via lant [at] stu [dot] lu [dot] se if you have questions regarding this.

I have studied many social science courses but I have recieved a message saying that I do not fulfil the specific eligibility criteria – why?
In order to be eligible for the programmes, you need to have a major in ONE social science discipline. In Sweden a major corresponds to at least three semesters of full-time study/90 credits in one discipline. A clear major is necessary for eligibility but we also take into consideration international variations in our evaluation of this aspect.

If I hold a Bachelor's degree with a major in Psychology, am I eligible?
The Master's programme is not open to students with a major in Psychology.
